PetEase unifies boarding, grooming, veterinary care, training, walking, and pet shopping into one connected platform. As Director of Product Design, I led the UX blueprint that replaced chaotic fragmented services with an integrated physical-digital operating system built to reduce separation anxiety.
PetEase started as a service marketplace — a directory of boarding kennels, groomers, and vets with a booking button attached. The strategic mandate was bigger: turn it into the trusted operating system pet parents run their entire caregiving life through, where a pet's medical history, care preferences, and daily routine live in one verified place instead of scattered across paper cards and WhatsApp threads.
Increase in vet appointment completions and calendar checkouts.
Direct clinic partner integrations with real-time map scheduling.
Active parents managing digital pet passports and vaccine alerts monthly.
PDF vaccine record parsing via OCR onboarding pipeline.
Millennial and Gen Z pet parents treat pets as core family members, but the services around them stayed archaic. Parents cross-reference paper immunization cards, WhatsApp grooming schedules, bulletin-board dog walkers, and legacy retail nutrition orders — four disconnected systems for one animal.
The cost isn't just inconvenience. If a dog is dropped at a kennel, the operator has zero access to verified medical history. That gap is where separation anxiety lives — and where trust breaks.
A secure, permanent, shared pet profile instantly accessible by vets, groomers, and boarders at checkout.
Real-time photo/video handovers built into bookings — a chronological care stream, not a status text.
Commerce woven into schedule feeds — food restocks prompted as medical treatment cycles turn over.
Separate channels for vets, groomers, and walking networks with no shared thread between them.
Leaving a pet with an unvetted carer triggers extreme emotional friction, especially for first-time owners.
Vaccination notes and allergy details live on printed charts, creating real medical risk.
Vets and groomers run manually without real-time integration, causing high dropout.
Occasional appointments don't build daily habits — the app needed reasons to open between visits.
Different health rules and schedules for multiple pets in one interface causes real cognitive strain.
Independent groomers and clinic staff lack a unified panel to manage bookings and pet details — the provider side of the marketplace was as broken as the parent side.
Booking-funnel data could tell us where people dropped off. It couldn't tell us why leaving a dog at a kennel felt like a small trauma. We built a research pipeline around diary studies, provider interviews, and in-shop observation specifically to surface that emotional layer.

Survey responses
Segments: urbanites, first-time adopters, multi-cat caretakers, groomer founders
82% of community-active users skipped star ratings entirely, searching review text for identical breed matches instead. Implication: surface breed-specific reviews and verified social connections directly on provider cards.
App status-checking quadrupled during initial kennel/walk handovers. Implication: standardize chronological care feeds with real-time walk paths, logs, and photos.
71% of owners couldn't locate physical vaccination records during an out-of-town trip. Implication: a structured Digital Medical Vault with OCR paper scanning.
64% of grooming inquiries stopped when direct booking was replaced by "Call to Book." Implication: real-time calendar with provider-updated slots, no phone required.
Actual photos of the pet eating or running boosted satisfaction 90% over generic text alerts. Implication: standardized photo-upload checklist flows for handlers.
Click-through on dog wellness tips dropped when sent to cat-only owners. Implication: filter every care insight through breed, weight, and age markers.
"When I book boarding, I want to review verified handler identity records so I can decide with zero logistical risk." Vaccination details need to auto-log into a permanent archive — no more carrying damaged paper records.
"When I leave my companion at a boarding lounge, I want live status streams so I can feel calm, not worried." When symptoms appear, instant triage tells a parent if it's a late-night emergency or not.
"When I coordinate care, I want suggestions backed by neighboring connections so I can feel like a responsible pet parent." Recommendations from owners with identical breed profiles carry real weight.

A basic directory with numeric ratings and calendar links. No data portability — parents re-explain their pet's needs to every new vet or groomer.
Confined listings · high-anxiety bookings · fragmented health files
A unified physical-digital hub where the profile is a verified health passport. Real-time updates, community validation, and automated scheduling are stitched together.
Verified multi-tenant files · reassurance tracking · proactive guidance
Identity verification and community badges come before transaction filters.
Profiles act as live parent vaults — layouts respond to the specific breed profile.
Shorter checkout fields, OCR document capture instead of manual typing.
Dietary proposals matched directly to age, clinical record, and activity level.
Chronological task lists and live updates, standardized across every provider type.
The architecture had to guarantee coordination between commerce and clinical consultation — a food recommendation engine that actually knows about a recent vet visit, not a separate app pretending the other one doesn't exist.
Permanent medical storage, OCR-scanned immunizations, allergy & weight logs, breed customization.
Vetted boarding, tailored grooming, on-demand walking, vets-on-call.
Breed-specific food, medical accessories, automated refills, subscriptions.
Daily records, vaccination reminders, loyalty bonuses, anxiety-reduction timelines.
Identity screening, background audits, and clinical certifications displayed clearly on every provider profile.
Hourly photo feeds, live walk paths, and direct check-ins uploaded in real time.
Reviews vouched for by neighborhood connections, matched to the reader's own breed.
Clinical records transfer instantly between parents, vets, and boarders at checkpoints.
Instant telemedicine access and vetted nearest-ER route tracking, available inside any active booking.
Personalized pet alerts → daily checklist cards → upcoming booking trackers → dynamic expiry warnings.
Geolocated provider maps → interactive filters → detailed team profiles → real-time booking cards.
Immunization trackers → OCR vaccine sync → clinical allergy feeds → historic treatment lists.
Breed-tailored foods → subscription auto-refills → vouched accessories → loyalty reward points.
Camera-first OCR scan of paper vaccine records at registration — no manual typing, immediate search access.
Breed-match tags and "used by 3 connections" badges surface trust before a single tap toward booking.
Real-time slots, transparent co-pay checkout, restock reminders sent 4 weeks post-appointment.
Hourly handler-uploaded photo updates; post-stay reviews carry a discount code into the next booking.

Single-tap schedule changes, balance checks, and alternative-slot suggestions during provider delays.
Three systems carried the strategy: the Pet Health Passport, the Transparent Boarding Journey, and the Integrated Services Marketplace. Eight deliverables shipped out of these pillars.
Owners need one source of truth for their pet, eliminating the risk of a medical error from a lost paper record.
Traditional trackers overwhelm owners with separated telemetry feeds. This synthesizes vaccine, calorie, and walk data into one feed.
Grooming bookings usually mean obscure pricing and wait times. Real-time slots and explicit style selectors remove the ambiguity.
Separation anxiety drives constant status-check requests. Chronological journal cards answer the question before it's asked.
Emergency vet search is stressful and slow by default. A single always-visible button establishes video in under 45 seconds.
Generic nutrition listings ignore individual allergies. Filtering ties commerce directly to the pet's actual medical profile.
Paper passports get lost, causing duplicate immunizations. A secure vault removes the physical dependency entirely.
Independent clinics, grooming salons, and boarding camps all needed to feel like one product, not three stitched-together tools.
Payment slots, checklist cards, medical vault tickers, map badges, and telemedicine overlays, compiled in React.
Warm sand, peach, amber, and safety-forest-green — dynamic CSS variables supporting light and dark modes.
Automated handoff pipelines and token packages cut prototype delivery time by 35%.

As Director of Product Design, my scope covered cross-functional workshops uniting Engineering, Marketing, Clinic Operations, and Executive stakeholders to define data-integrity standards and checkout co-payment rules.
Verified neighborhood signals drove more booking completions than star ratings ever did.
One data vault across vet, groomer, walker, and vaccine history beats isolated service listings on lifetime value.
High-contrast type, calm entrances, and live trackers measurably lowered parental anxiety during handoffs.
